Santa Claus is coming to town. Well, ohhhkaay, not JUST yet, though I’m pretty sure it’s all systems go up at the North Pole, BUT half-term is done and dusted and it’s already November. Bonfire night is now little more than a fug in the air, and poignant Remembrance poppies rightly proliferate. Christmas will be here in less time than it takes to shake an espresso martini, or at least that’s the way it feels. In fact I’m pretty sure LAST Christmas was only a matter of weeks ago. Last Christmas is a wonderful film by the way. Not quite in It’s a Wonderful Life’s league but it’s nonetheless worth a watch. And, as you’d expect from a film called Last Christmas, the soundtrack is chock-full of Wham and George Michael bangers. One to watch with the girls and wine and a fulsome supply of tissues.
Today is a Gift
Seriously though, whilst it is essential to be prepared and to shop early, autumn is such a beautiful time of year; it’s a terrible shame to rush through it en route to the festive season. Instead, try to make the most of every day and look for the beauty in everything. That could be the vibrant golds and russets of the turning trees, the crisp misty mornings, or cosying up on darker nights.
As the Dalai Lama himself pointed out, “there are only two days of the year in which nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly, to LIVE”.
Mohammed Ali, not necessarily best known for philosophy, said, “Don’t count the days, make the days count”. That’s especially pertinent at this time of year.
And, because I simply can’t include inspirational quotes without a sprinkling of Maya Angelou, “this is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.”
I’m pretty sure we HAVE seen the quote before, but it works here too.
Christmas is Coming
There is a balance to be struck here though. Yes, enjoy the here and now, appreciate the mists and mellow fruitfulness of autumn, but make plans for the joyous days ahead too. After all, even the big guy himself is making a list and checking it twice!
